Light Scattering Methodology

Measuring surfaces by scattering of light brings speed, high precision and quantitative assessment of functionally important components. OptoSurf has developed a new measuring system, which captures light scattered and reflected by the surface using precision optics and determines the statistical roughness parameter, as well as deviations from the form, based on the scattering distribution.

Manufacturers of high-value mass-produced components, e.g. for the automobile industry, have found the OptoSurf system of use when they must guarantee consistent surface quality, and they wish to cost-optimise their manufacturing processes.

How it works
Characteristic Values

The Angular Resolved Scattering method (ARS) permits rapid non-contact measurement of roughness and form of machined surfaces. By analysing a beam of light reflected from the surface, optical characteristics are established, which replicate the roughness (Aq, previously called So) and the deviations from form (M).

By means of comparative measurements the, the value of Aq can be correlated with the DIN EN ISO characteristic values Rdq, Ra and Rz. The roundness and waviness measurements are absolute and correspond with tactile form measuring instruments.
